Podcasting
About Podcaster In 2007 I discovered podcasts. Podcasts are similar to radio and tv shows but generally have much smaller budgets. There are thousands of podcasts for almost anything from bow hunting to knitting. Why are there so many shows? The Internet makes it very easy for anyone with a microphone or video camera to produce and publish a show to a large audience.

I have always enjoyed the genuine nature of podcasts. The host(s) seem real and approachable. In fact, I have contacted several and all have either responded vie email or on the show itself. In 2009, I decided to start producing my own shows.

Currently, I have only one show in production. It is a weekly audio program hosted by Jared Wirth and myself. We discuss science, technology, history, and more. The show is called 58% Geek and is available on iTunes.
Photography
About PhotographyIn 2008, I started to develop an interest in photography. As time progressed I became more familiar with the science, art, and terminology behind photography. In 2009 I purchased my first D-SLR camera, the Nikon D40. Since then I have been constantly experimenting and taking thousands of photos.

Photography is something I have really enjoyed over the last couple years. At this point I would consider myself an amateur photographer. I publish new photos often and have a website dedicated to some of my favorites at philtographer.com.
Social Media
I enjoy meeting and connecting with new people and also try to keep up with current friends and connections. However, it is usually difficult to meet with all of my old, current, and new friends on a regular basis. Social media services fill the gap between conventional communication such as a phone conversation and email, and meeting my friends in real life (IRL).

I am a big fan and user of social media services. There are several sites available to help you keep in touch with friends and family. Also, many make it easy to meet some great new friends and connections. I actively use Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Foursquare, and a few others to publish content, thoughts, notes, announcements, ask advice or suggestions, and seek employment.

In January of 2009, I co-founded the Lawrence Tweetup. The Lawrence Tweetup is a gathering of local social media users and friends. This group started as the result of locals, who frequently communicated with others on Twitter, deciding to meet IRL. The Lawrence Tweetup is a great way to meet people and discus anything related to social media or anything not related to social media. The group meets twice a month and is always welcome to newcomers.
Blogging
Currently I have only two blogs. The first is located in the /notes section of this website. This blog is updated with topics relating to project updates, news, science, coding, and technology. The second blog is located at philobyte.com. This blog is casual and more personal with updates about me and my family.
Profile Pict

Phil Martinez

I was born and raised in Kansas and spent most of my childhood living in farming communities. However, instead of farming, I found an interest in science and technology. I can remember at the age of 11 making an AM radio from an electronic project kit given to me by my grandfather. At age 12, my father bought a TI-99 and thus my passion for programming soon followed.

I continued programming as a hobby throughout high school while maintaining an active interest in science, technology, and math. After high school, I attended the University of Kansas and studied Mechanical Engineering. I graduated in 2007 and have pursued many other interests, in addition to engineering such as programming, website development, podcasting, DIY projects, and photography.
